Harvey Guillén, star of What We Do in the Shadows, shares a fun video that sees him crashing a cosplay meetup for fans of the show. What We Do in the Shadows is based on the 2014 mockumentary film of the same name, co-written and co-directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Clement adapted the movie for television, which keeps a similar premise, which sees a documentary crew following the lives of several vampire roommates and their familiar.
Guillén stars in the series alongside Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Mark Proksch, and Kayvan Novak. While the other leads in the show are vampires or an energy vampire in the case of Proksch’s Colin Robinson, Guillén portrays a familiar. In the world of What We Do in the Shadows, a familiar is a human servant to a vampire who helps in the hope of one day being turned into a vampire. Guillén’s Guillermo de la Cruz has served in this role since the series started. And while his character has grown, finding out that he descends from a line of vampire slayers, even displaying an aptitude for it himself, he is yet to be turned into a vampire as Novak’s Nandor promised.
Guillén shared a TikTok video that sees him surprising What We Do in the Shadows cosplayers at Dragon Con. The convention featured a meetup for fans of the series who cosplayed characters. Guillén took the opportunity to sneak in and surprise them as they gathered and took photos. The star even stuck around and took a picture with the group, featuring a few Guillermo cosplayers. What We Do in the shadows recently wrapped up its fourth season, which ended with Guillermo fed up with waiting to be turned into a vampire. Hence, he takes matters into his own hands, offering money to a vampire friend in exchange for finally being turned. What season 5 will ultimately have in store for the character remains to be seen, but the tease offers significant implications for Guillermo moving forward. Unfortunately, however, the series is known for often being cruel to Guillermo, and while it adds to the show’s humor, it also means that he may not get exactly what he is hoping for in the end.
Filming for What We Do in the Shadows season 5 recently got underway, with its debut set for sometime next year. Details are still scarce on what each character will be dealing with, but the implications for Guillermo could severely alter the character dynamics the series has had since it started. Still, What We Do in the Shadows viewers have more to look forward to, with Guillén thankful for such a loyal fanbase.
