‘The Woman King’ To Open #1 At The Box Office

The Viola Davis-led film, The Woman King, is poised to take the number one spot this weekend at the box office. The film, which Gina Prince Bythewood directed, hit theatres on September 16th. Before opening, the movie had a certified fresh 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on critical reviews. The Woman King currently has a 99% audience score on the site.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Woman King made nearly $7 million on its opening day. However, if predictions are to be believed, it will have grossed over $18 million by the end of the weekend, which is a bit slow in terms of competition. Though not a spectacular figure, this film will easily top the box office for the weekend. This is the case even without the film being a part of a franchise or a superhero movie.

Viola Davis, considered one of the greatest working actresses, has gone on record to say that this is her best work. Viola Davis has an Oscar under her belt and many other awards, but many say she may win Best Actress for The Woman King.

Who Else Is In ‘The Woman King’?

Besides Viola Davis as the lead character, the film stars Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega. Even though Davis is getting most of the critical praise, the entire cast shines in this historical action flick. TriStar Pictures and Entertainment One produced the movie.

The Woman King is an epic story based on true events. The movie centers around a kingdom in West Africa and its storied all-woman tribe that fight to free its people. The action film is well-rounded and has a little over two hours of runtime. Many critics have compared the movie to The Gladiator, and we couldn’t agree more.

The Woman King is exclusively in theatres now.
