The Sims 5 speculation mounts as The Sims 4 base game is going free

The Sims 5 speculation is mounting, with a special stream announced to mark The Sims 4‘s base game going permanently free.

EA and Maxis revealed in a post that The Sims 4 will be free to play from October 18 for all platforms, and that anyone who owns the game before then will receive the newly-released Desert Luxe Kit as a gift.

But more intriguing is confirmation of what is being described as a “special-edition stream” on that same date titled Behind The Sims Summit, which will be hosted on YouTube and Twitch.

“We’ll be sharing more about what’s in the works,” the post teased.

The Sims 5 is still likely a long way off, but Simmers on social media are speculating that we may get an official reveal for a sequel for the first time.

Up until now, any talk from EA about the next Sims game has always been described as the “next generation” of the franchise – but maybe that will change. We will find out soon enough.

What seems more of a sure thing is, with new packs for The Sims 4 continuing to be developed, we will get a glimpse at their plans for the current game’s next packs and Kits.

It makes sense for The Sims 4 to go free to play, given its age and the number of packs and Kits available for purchase. The game is now more than eight years old, having launched in 2014.

The free Desert Luxe Kit features a collection of Build/Buy items that are inspired by the natural landscapes of the Southwestern desert. The team collaborated with content creator AvelineSims on the Kit.

Simmers can redeem the Kit by simply logging into the game and claiming from the main menu.

Yesterday, the game received a patch that addresses a few glitches, including a ‘Groundhog Day’ bug that resets progress for affected saves.

The Sims 4 is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
