My Isekai Life was a new isekai anime title of the Summer 2022 anime season, starring the overpowered beast tamer/sage protagonist Yuji in his adventures across this fantasy realm. For the most part, My Isekai Life was a pretty conventional and straightforward isekai journey with some “monster of the week” elements, but it did have a few minor twists.
My Isekai Life ended on a high note with the apocalyptic sage’s defeat, but some lingering questions hang heavy over Yuji and My Isekai Life viewers alike. This anime was a coy one, hiding many tantalizing secrets about this world, how Yuji got there and how he might leave, assuming he even can. If My Isekai Life returns for a second season someday, it needs to provide some answers to these burning questions.
Will Yuji Ever Find His True Purpose in This Isekai Realm?
The first season of My Isekai Life clearly showed what Yuji can do but not necessarily why he can do it. All worthwhile protagonists in fiction have a clearly defined goal or motivation, and that applies to isekai anime too. Rimuru Tempest aimed to build a tolerant nation of monsters, while Naofumi Iwatani strives to save the world and then return home in one piece. However, My Isekai Life‘s Yuji merely wanders about, fighting villains and saving lives as he goes. If he can’t or won’t return to his old life, he needs something to live for in this world beyond experimenting with his powers, and the sky’s the limit. With his creativity, powers, connections and reputation, Yuji could build any life he wanted, such as founding his own guild or becoming the major of a town. No matter his magical power, Yuji will remain unfulfilled until he finds a life’s purpose that speaks to him.
Will Yuji Return to His Office Life in Japan, and How?
In many isekai anime, the journey to a new world is a one-way trip, as is the case for Rimuru Tempest, Azusa Aizawa and Leon Bartfort, among other protagonists. However, some isekai titles tease the possibility of the hero returning home under the right conditions, and that may apply to Yuji. He seems confident that he can somehow return to his old life in Japan and resume his labor-intensive office job there, but it’s not yet clear whether Yuji can do this, or why he would want to. The anime gave no hint that Yuji can possibly return home, especially since he doesn’t have a reincarnation goddess to talk to about this, such as Melfina in Black Summoner. The anime didn’t even fully explain why Yuji wants to give up this thrilling escapism adventure in favor of a thankless, back-breaking office job, but a second season might. Fans can only guess what’s going on in Yuji’s head.
Was Yuji Summoned on Purpose?
Even Yuji’s arrival in this fantasy realm is shrouded in mystery, and isekai aficionados will want to know how and why Yuji found himself in this new world. Based on similar isekai titles, there are a few distinct possibilities, some of which may have huge implications for My Isekai Life‘s overall plot. Yuji’s arrival in this realm could be a total accident, but it also could have been intentional. Some isekai heroes are summoned deliberately, usually to serve as guardians of peace or dogs of war. Naofumi and the other three Cardinal Heroes were summoned by Melromarc’s court wizards to fight off the Waves, for example, while a priestess in Black Summoner did something similar when she summoned Toya’s party. Perhaps an unknown party summoned Yuji to take on the cult of the blue moon and prevent the apocalypse. If someone did summon Yuji here on purpose, Yuji could potentially meet them in a possible Season 2 and gain some insights.
When Will the Blue Moon Cult Strike Again?
The blue moon cult proved to be Yuji’s worst enemy of all, with cult members directly and indirectly challenging him throughout the anime, including the final battle with Walter and the mighty sage whom he summoned. However, even with Walter and the sage dead and gone, the threat of the blue moon remains, as some ominous, open-ended scenes in Episode 12 showed. Some high-ranking members of the cult are plotting their revenge, and no one, not even Yuji himself, knows how and when they will strike next. Yuji cannot rest easy; it sounds like these cultists have a black dragon ace up their sleeve, and that may be just the start. If My Isekai Life has a second season with monster-of-the-week episodes, Yuji could face all manner of evil Dungeons & Dragons-style creatures, wizards and more. It seems the battle has just begun, but it’s anyone’s guess how it will eventually end.
