The Pokemon franchise began with the video games, Pokemon Red and Blue, but it has since expanded to include trading cards, manga, movies, and television. Ash Ketchum, one of the main characters in the television series, has become as recognizable as many of the Pokemon. Though he has enjoyed worldwide fame for years, the series has yet to reveal who his father is, which has left fans to come up with their own theories.
Ash has managed to endure as a character because fans find it easy to relate to him, as he goes through the same experiences that gamers do when they play the Pokemon games. His unending perseverance and his love for Pokemon make him a lovable protagonist through and through, and he illustrates the best way for humans and Pokemon to live together harmoniously. Future Pokemon episodes should explore Ash’s family, and reveal who his father is.
Who Is Ash Ketchum’s Father?
Throughout the Pokemon franchise, Ash Ketchum has served as the anime’s protagonist. In many ways, Ash parallels the Pokemon‘s creator, Satoshi Tajiri, and in Japan, Ash shares Satoshi’s name. As a child, Satoshi was very fond of insect collecting, which mimics the ways Ash is obsessed with catching as many Pokemon as possible. Ash is a ten-year-old from Pallet Town, and after he gets his first Pokemon, Pikachu, from Professor Oak, he goes on a quest to become the greatest Pokemon Master.
During his journey, he is joined by several friends who come and go, including Misty from Cerulean City Gym, Brock from Pewter City Gym, and Goh, who is obsessed with Mew. Ash is also constantly supported by his mother, Delia Ketchum, who usually has Mr. Mime around to help her with housework. There have been a few episodes that feature Ash’s mother, and she even receives a relatively large role in Pokemon 3: The Movie. However, the same has never occurred with Ash’s father, and his identity remains a mystery.
It is strange that nothing has ever been mentioned regarding Ash’s father, as later seasons of Pokemon have not been afraid to give backstories to longtime characters. Pokemon Journeys gives Pikachu an origin story, revealing how the beloved critter evolved from Pichu, and where it lived before it met Ash. There has also been plenty of crucial information revealed about Ash, including in Pokemon: XYZ where the origin of his love for Pokemon is shown.
Theories Surrounding the Identity of Ash’s Dad
With no official answers from the anime, Pokemon fans have tried piecing together information to formulate their own theories. One of the most popular theories argues that Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, is Ash’s dad. Through the lens of this theory, Giovanni sends Jessie and James to catch Pikachu not because he believes these bumbling Team Rocket members can do it, but because he wants them to keep an eye on his son. Some more outlandish theories claim that Mr. Mime is Ash’s dad, a theory fueled by how much time Delia spends with Mr. Mime. This would mean that Ash is half-human and half-Pokemon.
As the Pokemon franchise continues, fans could see Ash’s father uncovered, although it will take a lot to explain why he has been out of the picture for so long, and he has not been mentioned even once. Regardless, both Ash and Delia seem to have managed to get on fine without him, and he even managed to win the Manalo Conference in Alola. Although his father has not been around, folks like Professor Oak have always been around to serve as a mentor to him, so even with his father out of the picture, the Pokemon protagonist still has lots of support.
