Warning: Piofiore: Episodio 1926 does contain violence as well as gruesome bloodshed. It touches on a few sensitive topics like drug abuse and (attempted) rape. If you are not comfortable with this, I would not recommend playing this game.

Liliana in 1926

Piofiore: Episodio 1926 picks up a year after the first game ended (in 1926 as the title says). We get to see how all the characters are doing with Liliana Adornato after their Happy Ending routes. You will be thrown back into the fray of Burlone in Italië, where three powerful mafia families fight to rule over the town. In this sequel, we find out more about Lilliana’s past and what links her fate to Burlone.

In Piofiore: Episodio 1926 there are two stories to choose from. The first one is Episodio Burlone which is the continuation of the individual routes of the mafia men. The second one is Episodio Alternativa which is based on the Finale End of the original game. There is also a route for Henri, which is the after story for Henri’s ending in the first game.

The Suave Mafia Guys

Unlike the first game, no route is locked. So, the route order does not matter for this game. I went with the order: Orlok -> Gilbert-> Nicola -> Yang -> Dante -> Henri because I wanted to start with someone that appealed the least to me in the original game and end with the official ending character.

In the first game, we find out that Orlok is an informant for all the mafia families and other big players in Burlone. He is/was in service as a loyal disciple of the Church and a skilled assassin from the young age of 18. In the original game, Orlok was appointed Lili’s personal protector from the mafia by the Church. In this game, Orlok has found himself worthy of protecting Lili and finds out more information about his own past.

He is very much the little brother type in the game and tries hard to get Lili to see her as a real man, that’s worthy of her affection.

Orlok, the little brother type

Gilbert is the boss of the Visconti mafia family and originates from Chicago in the United States. He will charm everyone’s socks off and knows how to make everyone comfortable around him. But do not be fooled by his charming words because he can be very cunning. In the first game, he was accused of counterfeiting bills in Burlone. With the help of the other mafia bosses, this case was solved in the end.

In 1926 Gilbert is really working on his business in different countries, but deals threaten to go south when a ghost of the past comes back to haunt him and Lili.

Gilbert, the boss of the Visconti mafia family

He is the second in command in the Falzone family. Also known as the underboss. He is a good-looking man, and he knows it. His attitude is very playful and flirty towards women and at first glance, you wouldn’t expect him to be part of a big mafia family. But after getting to know him, you see different sides of him and how he is willing to do anything for his cousin and boss Dante and the family.

In Piofiore: Fated Memories he was planning on bringing the Falzone down to give his cousin Dante a chance at a better and easier life, by working with the Visconti. In 1926 he reflects on his actions from 1925 and tries to work on himself.

Nicola, second in command in the Falzone family

He is the leader of the Chinese mafia, the Lao Shu which is a daughter branch of a bigger mafia in China. He is mysterious and violent and his moods tend to change rapidly, but he is also very intelligent and is always one step ahead of everyone. In the first game, Yang learned that Lili had value to the Falzone family and kidnapped her to their base. All the while the Falzone and Visconti families were working to get rid of the Lao Shu, because the Lao Shu was distributing drugs. Plus, we had a betrayal in the family of Yang’s right-hand man. In 1926 his story is about his dark past and his working on being more human than a monster. all of that is put to the test when the Chinese mafia gets involved

Yang, leader of the Chinese mafia, the Lao Shu.

Dante is the head of the Falzone family and resides in the Falce district. His mafia is really an actual family because they need to keep the bloodline pure in order to protect Burlone’s Holy Relic. In the first game, his route with Lili was about protecting the Holy Relic and keeping Lili, who is the ‘Key Maiden’, safe from harm. A year later Lili is still living with Dante in the mansion and tries her hardest to help Dante with his workload, but family comes for a visit which turns everything upside down.

Dante as a character is very serious, calm and collected and a hard worker. But towards Lili he is very sweet and gets flustered easily around her. This makes his romance with Lili really adorable at times and very easy to get into.

Serious, calm and collected, Dante

This character remained secret in Fated Memories until the Finale End. As it turned out he was revealed to be the director of the casino in Burlone. His mission in the game was to destroy the mafia because of what happened to the previous maiden key, his sister Chloe. In the Finale, he took pity on Lili because of the similarities between his sister and her and they escaped together to a town in France. In Piofiore: Episodio 1926 Henri and Lili go back to Burlone after a quite gruesome event. They try to find out who was the culprit and how they can stop him from hurting them both.

I personally couldn’t really get a good impression of Henri as a character. As the director, he had lots of personalities and was always one step ahead, but as Henri, he was a little boring. I guess you could view him as the reserved type, who wants to do the right things for Liliana.

Is Henri a little boring?

Visuals and sound

As in the previous game, the visuals show beautiful artwork. The background scenes have been illustrated on something that looks like watercolour paper or different textures mixed. The scenery itself is authentic Italian and the perfect background material for setting a scene. The characters in Piofiore: Episodio 1926 each have their own colour palette and these colours complement each other well, making sure the character stands out on the screen and giving off a satisfying image.

And as stated in the review for Piofiore: Fated Memories, the characters also have gold flower patterns on their clothing. These extra patterns and flower details give the characters a little extra flair.

Patterns and flower decorations on their clothing

The background music during gameplay is mostly the same. Which was okay for me, since I have been loving Piofiore’s background music ever since the first game. It really fits the Italian theme and makes me feel for the characters.

The opening and ending songs of Piofiore: Episodio 1926 were also already familiar to me since I have been listening to them for a while now on YouTube. They are lovely songs to listen to while you are doing some extra work during your free time.

MS System

Most of the system in the game remains the same. Which made the menu easy to work with and the MS system is also back. The MS system is a notification you can get in the game while playing routes. It often shows things that are happening at that moment outside of Lili’s perspective.

There are two new additions to the game. Let’s start with Aria. Once in a while, the Aria notification pops up on the screen with a highlighted word in the text. The Aria is a feeling the person is experiencing in that moment, and we even get a CG from the first game with the character recalling their feelings.

The second system change is the menu for the Episodio Alternativa. This is not a route that you can follow. There are 8 scenes you can watch that follow the Finale End of the first game. After completing this advent calendar of scenes you get to the true Alternativa story.

Overall thoughts

Piofiore: Fated Memories was the first Otome game I have ever played (find my review here). I fell head over heels in love. To me, this game had the perfect line-up of men, the music and visuals fitted the theme of Italie, and the stories were pretty interesting. I really looked forward to this game ever since it was announced, and I am not disappointed.

I loved the interactions we got between Lili and the men now that they are in a relationship with her. Piofiore: Episodio 1926 made me see the men in a different light, by showing their soft side for Lili. I especially loved Gilbert in this game, I often laughed at his texts and found his loving teasing toward Lili quite endearing.

The game once again had exciting plot points with a lot of twists and turns. One of the reasons for these new twists was the new side characters. Some of them I found interesting and really added to the game, while others felt a little bland to me. They were characters that are similar to other characters I have seen before in the game, and we really didn’t find out much about them or their past.

Another thing I would like to note is the MS system. I felt there were a lot of pop-ups for the MS system in the routes, and the stories they showed were, in my opinion, not always noteworthy. On a few occasions, I even skipped them to stay in the story.

One more point would be the CGs (Computer Graphics), I felt the amount of CGs lacked a little. I know that the player gets one CG per chapter, but there were a lot of moments in the game that could have been made into a CG. I would have loved to see the routes divided into more chapter so that we could have gotten more CGs

The game is worth the money in terms of quantity, you get a lot of content to play with. All the routes that come after the Happy Endings, an advent calendar that previews the story for the Finale End with eight chapters and the actual Finale End route. I think you could spend many hours on the game even though it is a sequel.

Overall, I still love Piofiore: Episodio 1926 and I think if you are a Piofiore: Fated Memories lover, you will like this game as well. The first was a bit better for me personally, as this game was a little bit more of the same. But it had good stories that had me at the edge of my seat and the romance was really dialled up in this game for a lot of routes. Luckily this game actually had plot points and a story, it was not just them going on lovey dovey dates. So I still enjoyed this game a lot.

However, this game was a lot darker than the first. It includes rape and attempted rape and involves a lot of bloodshed in gruesome ways. So, if that is not your style I would not recommend this game.

Final verdict: I like it
