Pikmin 4 Is Coming In 2023 (For Real This Time)

Pikmin 4 was announced for 2023 in a recent Nintendo Direct. A brief teaser showed environments, enemies, and the logo for the upcoming game.

In a recent Nintendo Direct, Pikmin 4 has been announced, and will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Pikmin 4 will be the first new mainline installment in the series since the release of Pikmin 3 for the Wii U in 2013. While other titles have been released in the meantime, such as the Switch remaster Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and Pikmin Bloom for mobile devices, the release of Pikmin 4 will mark the first entirely new mainline title in the series in ten years.

Pikmin is among Nintendo’s more popular franchises – although it doesn’t rank among titans such as Mario or Zelda in terms of popularity, the series has endured all the way since its first entry on the GameCube in 2001. The games follow a simple, yet compelling formula: players find themselves stranded on an alien world, where they can recruit a small army of plant-like creatures called Pikmin to help them in combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. Nintendo’s support for the series, however, has been seen as lacking by some fans, as the franchise has begun to take long breaks between mainline installments, with spinoffs such as the Pokémon GO-like Pikmin Bloom filling the void.

Fans of the Pikmin series can look forward to 2023, however, as Shigeru Miyamoto has announced in a recent Nintendo Direct that Pikmin 4 is forthcoming. The announcement has been long-awaited, especially since Miyamoto has confirmed the game’s ongoing development as far back as 2015. The 34-second announcement trailer from Nintendo contains a few new looks at the game, showing off a few environments as well as the series’ signature Bulborb enemies, followed by a shot of the game’s title.

Pikmin 4 Receives New Trailer, Set To Release In 2023

The quick look at Pikmin 4 shows little of what to expect from the game, and provides only a vague launch time in 2023. As such, the game could still be a long way off, but Nintendo is likely to share more information in later presentations. The game was presented alongside information about the franchise’s mobile game spinoff Pikmin Bloom, as well as a few elaborations from Miyamoto on what Pikmin 4 will include, such as simplified controls and a new, low-to-the-ground camera perspective.

An official announcement for Pikmin 4 has been long-awaited by fans of the franchise, who will undoubtedly rejoice at finally receiving news on the series’ future. While this is hardly the first time Nintendo has made fans of its franchise wait for a new installment, the ten-year gap between Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4 still stands out as a particularly long wait between entries in a Nintendo franchise. Fans of Pikmin will just have to wait and see if Pikmin 4 can live up to the lofty expectations set by previous entries.
