Naruto is a manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump for 15 years between 1999 and 2014. The series was a smash hit, and as of 2022, it currently has over 250 million copies in circulation worldwide. The manga has since spawned multiple anime adaptations, including Naruto (2002-2007), Naruto Shippuden (2007-2017), and Boruto (2017-). The franchise has also produced several original movies. Today, Naruto is considered to be one of the “big three” in shonen anime, alongside Bleach and One Piece.

The series follows the story of a young boy, Naruto Uzumaki, on his journey to becoming a ninja. On the day of Naruto’s birth, the destructive spirit of Kurama the Nine-Tailed Fox was sealed within him, saving his village from destruction. However, the people of the village shunned Naruto throughout his childhood for the terrifying power within him. At twelve years old, Naruto has become obnoxious and attention-seeking, and lacks the discipline of his peers. Despite his seeming lack of aptitude, Naruto is determined to become the next Hokage—the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village and the most powerful ninja of all.

Out of the dozens of characters in the series, perhaps none are as central to Naruto’s journey as Sasuke Uchiha—Naruto’s best friend and bitter rival. The relationship between the two characters is intense and complicated. Though Sasuke and Naruto care deeply about each other, but circumstances often put the two at odds throughout the series. Their battle in the 20th anniversary logo pays homage to the plentiful conflicts Naruto and Sasuke have endured, including their climactic duel at the Valley of the End during the conclusion of the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Boruto are currently available through Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Funimation. The original anime series and several of the franchise’s original movies are on Netflix.
