Michael Owen says Tottenham’s Richarlison strays offside ‘all the time’

Michael Owen was really frustrated with Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison following his performance against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

It was always going to be a difficult game for Spurs, but they stayed in it. However, two mistakes very late in the game cost them, and Antonio Conte was furious with his side – mainly for conceding two goals, but also for not converting their chances at the other end of the pitch.

Michael Owen says Tottenham star Richarlison strays offside ‘all the time’

Tottenham got close to scoring quite a few times against Sporting this week. Richarlison arguably came the closest after he put the ball in the back of the net, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

The Brazilian was caught offside on three different occasions during the game. Owen, who was watching him from BT Sport’s studios, was beyond frustrated and claimed that Richarlison does this ‘all the time.’

The Englishman said on BT Sport’s coverage of the game, as quoted by HITC: “I can’t stand people that run offside all the time, I can’t stand it.

“I think it’s so amateurish really. You should never be miles offside. If you mistime a run, okay, you’re just offside, but you know what, there are certain players – and Richarlison is one – that are just offside all the time – all the time.

“If somebody goes to knock a ball, you’ve got to make sure you’re this side of the defender. This is not like bad luck, ‘ooh he’s just mistimed it’ or anything like that – it’s every time with him.

“He’s a very good player but he could definitely brush up on that side of things.”

Attackers straying offside when you’re chasing a game or trying to break the deadlock can be really annoying.

That’s exactly what irked Owen on Tuesday as Richarlison could’ve made the difference for Spurs if he had just timed his runs better.

This, however, is not an issue that cannot be corrected. Conte would’ve surely noticed this part of his game, and he will make the Brazilian work on it. That should help him become a lot better in the coming months and make him much more dangerous than he already is.

Tottenham take on Leicester on Saturday, and it will be interesting to see if Richarlison will keep his place in the side.
