Friendliest Enemies In Video Games

In most video games, there is a pretty uiniversal goal of defeating enemies. You’re a stalwart hero going out to save the world from whatever foe may stand in your way! Victory is just a jump, slash, or strike away and it’s up to you to get there.

However, not all villains are inherently evil and trying to hurt you. Some started out friendly, some became friendly, and some have been friendly the whole time! So let’s take a look at those enemies who at some point were friendly.

Warning: there are spoilers aplenty!

10 Darth Revan – Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

There is no one in fiction quite as evil as a Sith Lord and Darth Revan is no exception. After leaving the Jedi to participate in the Mandalorian Wars, Revan and his apprentice Darth Malak invade the Republic only for Malak to turn on Revan and blasted his ship in space. Even with Darth Malak as the main villain of Knights Of The Old Republic, Revan’s presence can be felt throughout the story.

What makes this especially interesting is that the main character you created is Revan, but with his memory wiped. And since the game has a morality system leasing towards the light and the dark side, you get to decide how friendly or mean Darth Revan actually is. It’s a great reveal and an excellent way to show that a person’s past doesn’t define their future.

9 Mr. L – Super Paper Mario

The mysterious Mr. L, also known as The Green Thunder, from Super Paper Mario is one of the best characters in the game. He’s a fierce combatant, built a robot modeled after his own head, and no one knows his real identity.

Ok, that’s not true. It’s clearly Luigi. He was brainwashed to be evil by Nastasia and only returned to being Luigi after he was destroyed by Dimentio. He helps Mario and friends once they save him from the Underwhere and becomes a true friend, just like Luigi has always been.

8 Aipom – Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus changed everything we knew about catching Pokemon. Instead of wandering into a patch of grass and having Pokemon fight each other, now these monsters roam free and can attack you directly. This makes every single Pokemon so much more intimidating. Well, every Pokemon except for Aipom.

Instead of attacking the player, Aipom will run right up and just stand right in front with that big ol’ grin on its face. Even if you try and catch it, Aipom won’t attack you. It’s just a cheeky little monkey. While most Pokemon may attack you and others might run away, Aipom is a welcoming beacon of positivity.

7 Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze) – Batman Arkham City/Knight

Of all of Batman’s rogues gallery, Mr. Freeze is easily the most sympathetic villain. While most bad guys might be after money, power, or just pure chaos, Victor Fries just wants to find a cure for his terminally ill wife, Nora, who is kept frozen in a cryogenic chamber. Sure, his methods may be questionable, but the motivation behind them is pure.

In Arkham City and Arkham Knight, Fries battles the dark knight, but also helps him. He only attacks Batman when The Joker kidnaps Nora and he feels he has no choice. It becomes even more heartbreaking in Arkham Knight when Nora is released from her frozen status and the two of them decide to sail into the sunset, dying together.

6 The Fixer – Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart

The Fixer from Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is a giant robot that only wants to fix things that are broken. However, after defending his planet from marauding ships, he becomes overwhelmed by the destruction and declares that nothing can be fixed. Instead, he tries to destroy every broken thing to essentially put them out of their misery.

Although The Fixer is destructive, all he wants to do is help things that are broken. Eventually, Clank is able to reason with The Fixer that just because something is broken it’s valuable, even if it can’t be fixed. The Fixer sees that not all is lost and he returns to his repairing ways, hoping to do the best he can.

5 White Mushroom – Kingdom Hearts

The heartless from Kingdom Hearts are terrifying shadow-like creatures that want to steal the hearts of humans. While this concept is terrifying, quite a few of them are pretty cute and downright friendly. And the kindest of them all has got to be the White Mushroom.

The White Mushroom doesn’t attack Sora and friends. Instead, it just wants to play a game of charades. It will act something out and all you have to do is cast the spell that relates to it. Do this enough times and you’ll be rewarded with some rare items. It looks like the White Mushroom is just a really fun guy!

Sorry, I had to.

4 Wheatley – Portal 2

GLaDOS is one of the greatest villains in all of video games. She’s smart, menacing, deadly, and really really hates you. This is all the opposite of Wheatley, another core at Aperture that was programmed to fill GLaDOS with terrible ideas. That’s why it’s so surprising when he becomes the main antagonist for Portal 2.

At first, Wheatley wants to stop GLaDOS’ reign of terror and help you escape. He may mess up a lot of the time, but his heart is in the right place. However, he becomes corrupted by the amount of power and wants to run tests on you just like his predecessor. But at the end after he’s sent to the vaccuum of space, all he really wants to do is apologize. Wheatley may be a computer core, but he’s also a good egg overall.

3 Axel – Kingdom Hearts 2

Kingdom Hearts 2 left players with a lot of questions, especially if they hadn’t played Chain of Memories. Where was Sora, Donald, and Goofy? Who’s Roxas? And why does Axel keep attacking him? Well, in order to answer the latter question, people just needed to play the game.

Roxas and Axel are Nobodies and members of Organization XIII. When Roxas left and had his memory replaced with a new one, his best friend Axel wanted nothing more than to get him back because they were best friends. He believed that the best way to do this was to battle him and eventually defeat him. While this may seem like a questionable tactic, it turns out that it worked in the long run when both Axel and Roxas eventually find their true selves.

2 Waddle Dee – Kirby

It seems that every popular gaming series has iconic common enemies. Mario has Goombas, Dragon Quest has Slimes, and Kirby has Waddle Dees. And Waddle Dees have got to be the sweetest and cutest enemies ever created.

The native species of Planet Popstar, Waddle Dee just kind of exists. They wander around care-free and when they actually attack Kirby, it’s from tripping into him. On top of that, they spend just as much time helping Kirby as hurting him. Just look at Kirby And The Forgotten Land! Despite their allegiance to King Dedede, Waddle Dees are just adorable creatures going about their life.

1 Cerberus – Hades

While I’m sure every dog that you fight in a video game is a good boy or girl, Cerberus from Hades is the goodest boy of all. He sleeps next to Hades and you can go up and pet him if you wish. Zagreus grew up with him, so Cerberus won’t attack you. That’s why it’s so surprising to see him at the exit of Hades when you get there.

But even then, Cerberus refuses to attack you. Instead, you just have to find his favorite snack to move past him. Cerberus may not be an enemy in the traditional sense, but he is a creature that blocks your path and it’s only because of his love that Cerberus keeps you alive. And not killing you might be the kindest thing of all.
